No, EEG is a completely painless procedure. The electrodes only record electrical signals and do not cause discomfort.
EEGs are very safe. The procedure does not involve X-rays, radiation, or electrical stimulation. However, in rare cases, flashing lights may trigger seizures in photosensitive epilepsy patients.
Results are typically available within:
Routine EEG: 3-5 business days
Ambulatory or HVEM: 2-4 weeks
In urgent cases, the reporting neurologist will contact the referring doctor immediately to convey verbal report.
CNS operates as a private service, and out-of-pocket charges may apply. However, most insurance companies do not cover outpatient tests. Please check with your insurance provider for better clarity.
The EEG technologist cannot tell you the results, and administration staff will not provide results over the telephone. You must make arrangements with your doctor to receive the results.
Yes, in order to access medicare rebate for the tests, you will require a valid referral from your GP or specialist.
As Melbourne Neurodiagnostics is a private clinic, there is an out-of-pocket (or gap)
fee to get a test done. The exact amount depends on the type of EEG required. A full
financial disclosure will be provided to the families before making an appointment.
We need a doctor referral to book for an EEG test. Please arrange your GP or
specialist doctor to send us a referral. A referral can be sent ether online or

A routine EEG usually takes about an hour, but sometimes it may take longer,
especially if a sleep recording is needed.
An ambulatory EEG is recorded at home over 24 hours.
A HVEM is recorded at home over 48 to 72 hours.
